Lara Youssef Nabawy is a Swiss painter originally German-Egyptian whose practice lives in the space between painting and sculpture. Sand is her primary material, layered, shaped and pressed into canvas until the surface holds its own topography. We spent a day in her atelier, close enough to feel the work. The film moves between Lara speaking about her practice and Lara inside it, her hands, the grain of the sand, the way her surfaces catch and hold light differently depending on where you stand. Her work rewards that kind of attention. We made sure the film did too. What we captured in that atelier are the small, almost invisible gestures that happen between intention and result: the ones that explain everything when you find yourself standing in front of one of her pieces, unable to look away.
